Introduction to Video FAQs

 

What does the workshop cost?

Tuition for an Introduction to Video workshop is $600 for the course and materials. ($575 for early registrations received 6-weeks prior to the workshop start date.) A $100 deposit is required to reserve your spot, with the remainder due four weeks before the workshop begins. This tuition ($600) covers instructor and material fees.

Housing and meals are location specific (averaging $300 for housing and $125 for meals). These costs will cover room and board from Sunday night through Saturday morning. Students requiring additional time at the facility will be charged an additional fee, and will need to make special arrangements.

 

How long are the workshops?

IPS workshops generally begin at 8:30 A.M. Monday and end  by 7:00 P.M. Friday. These are intensive, week-long workshops, with sessions starting at 8:30 each morning and ending at 9:00 each evening.

Students flying should plan to arrive between 1 P.M. and 6 P.M. on Sunday, and depart after 9:00 A.M. the following Saturday. Airport runs outside of these time frames may be charged an additional airport shuttle fee of $25.

Students who are driving should plan to arrive at the classroom location by 8:30 A.M. on Monday.

 

What are the course prerequisites?

Students must have previously attended a Prizewinning Photography workshop or have a similar level of training/experience with digital photography/videography. Students should also be familiar with their computer as described below.

 

What equipment is required for Introduction to Video?

  • DSLR with video or Digital video camera (HD only, no tape!!)
  • Camera manual
  • External mic (we recommend Rode VideoMic)
  • Extra or rechargeable batteries (camera and mic)
  • Variable Neutral Density filter (Check out these links: Variable ND 1 Double Polarizer)
  • Fast prime lens (50mm f/1.8 or something similar)
  • Tripod (Pan-tilt head recommended)
  • 2x 8GB memory cards (more if you can!)
  • Personal computer (see below...)
  • External mouse (trust us... you want more than your trackpad!)
  • Video editing software (see system specific information below...)

What kind of computer is required for Introduction to Video?

Windows computers will be running Adobe Premier Elements 8.0 or Adobe Premier Pro. Students should purchase this program before the course.
System Requirements (Premier Elements):

  • Intel P4, Centrino, Intel Core 2 Duo (or compatible) 2Ghz or better processor
  • Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 3, Windows Vista, or Windows 7
  • 2GB RAM (4GB+ Highly Recommended)
  • 100GB+ free disk space (may be external)
  • 1024x768 (XGA) or better display

Macintosh computers will be running Final Cut Pro or Final Cut Express 4. Students should purchase this program before the course.
System Requirements (Final Cut Express):

  • PowerPC G4, or G5, or Intel Core Duo or Solo processor 1.25GHz+
  • Mac OS 10.4.10 (or later)
  • 1GB RAM (2GB+ Highly Recommended)
  • 100GB+ free disk space
  • 1024x768 (XGA) or better display

 

What computer skills do I need for this course?

Computer skills are a must for this workshop! Make sure you know how to accomplish the following:

  • Navigate your computer (for example: locate your Pictures/My Pictures folder, save and locate files)
  • Install programs, printers, and drivers
  • Navigate the Internet
  • Download images from a camera to a computer
  • Digital asset management (file management)
  • Typing 60 or more words per minute is a plus for all those notes you’ll want to take!

 

What about the dress code?

In order to maintain professional decorum, workshop attendees are requested to abide by the following guidelines for the duration of the course.

  • Casual, modest-fitting slacks or skirts at least knee-length when sitting.
  • Athletic pants or jeans (sorry, no shorts) for afternoon free time and recreation
  • Clean-cut polo shirts, button-down shirts, or t-shirts free of obnoxious graphics or writing.
  • Comfortable shoes for extended periods of walking.
