F/Stop - Prizewinning Photography - April, 2007

Beep, beep, beeeeep... my alarm clock blared, quickly bringing me out of a deep sleep. I jumped out of bed and remembered that this was the day that I had been looking forward to the most, Portraiture and Group photography at the beautiful Dallas Arboretum.

After breakfast and morning devotions I grabbed my gear along with every one else and headed to the vans. Upon our arrival at the Arboretum, we were assigned to one of three rotating workshops, Family, Bridal and Senior portraiture. Will, Katie, and Christina each did a fantastic job of demonstrating the practical and nitty-gritty aspects of photography, each in their respective areas of expertise.

At noon we all met back together for a group photo. Once everyone had been put in place, Rowan started the self-timer on the camera and sauntered to his place, adding a final degree of polish to the already fine image.

Creative ideas for images floated through my mind as I hastily consumed my lunch. In a few short hours I needed to capture at least six images that embodied the principles of prizewinning photography. Additionally, we were challenged to capture the concepts of "Happy" and "Intricate".

At the appointed time, everyone rendezvoused and returned to the Dallas Training Center with their images safely captured. After the prints are returned, my fellow students and I will be responsible to thin down to the best six and submit them for critique.

The evening was finished out with time of fellowship, laughter, and portfolio sharing. This was a great day, but I have sneaking suspicion that tomorrow will be even greater...

Today was an amazing day, and I mean AMAZING. There's so much to learn so it keeps it challenging yet achievable. I learned about different filters, lighting, and portraiture. The list of stuff I want to learn just keeps getting longer and longer. I'm loving it.

It's crazy that we still have two full days left. I can't help but wonder what God is going to show me in those next days. God's handiwork is so evident in everything you shoot. Finding different things to shoot that shows God's work is endless.

It's really teaching me more than just a photography tip; it's teaching me that God is awesome. Beyond any lens capability to capture. I can't wait to go shooting tomorrow and try to make my pictures even better so I can show the world just how awesome He really is.

Upon our begining at 7:00 this morning, we got right into our day with some envigorating exercise—"pull-ups", "sit-ups", and a few "fingertip push-ups." Then we dug into our "wisdom search" with another installment of our video lecture on leadership, which covered the three keys to credibility: are you competent, trustworthy, and dynamic.

Following breakfast came the final analysis of the daily contest photos, and instructions for our photo shoot of the day. We arrived at the Dallas Famer's Market at about 9:30AM, and had until 11:45AM to complete our assignments. Our limitations for the day were a total of 48 photos, 24 each in B&W and color. Also, digital users were denied the use of LCD verification of images, or ANY deletions.

Our assignments for the day were to capture at least one illustration of each of the following: Rule of thirds, leading lines, repetition, side lighting, back lighting, and high contrast black & white. Also, our contests for the day were "discarded" and "new", as well as our daily "picture of the day".

The Farmer's Market encompasses several acres, and includes vast quantities of flowers, fruit, vegetables, metal sculptures, and furniture. For the alloted time, we worked in groups of two or three, and tried to find creative, individualistic ways to fulfill our quota of photos. The day was heavily overcast, but thankfully, the rain held off until we were finished with our morning work. It was definitely a great place to work on our creative skills, and I am looking forward to the exciting photo critique session this evening!

My first day at IPS... hmm, let's see. Well, I came here not knowing what to expect. I knew that it would be a lot of learning and an awesome experience, but I have learned so much even in the first day! I pray that I will be able to remember it all!

The photo shoot in downtown was a blast! It was really great for me to have the challenge of fulfilling a photo assignment while putting my own spin on it. Let's say that I will have come to see just how much I need to learn (this is a good thing ;-).

Although the learning part is awesome and the pictures are so much fun, there are two other key things that have helped me know it'll be an awesome two weeks. One is the amazing spiritual emphasis. It really is all about God, and its great to have someone teaching from that perspective. The other is how friendly and helpful all of the instructors are. They are awesome!
