IPS students deliver through rain, wind, snow, and fog. We left the Riverfront Character Inn around 8:00 this morning and headed to Detroit to take pictures at the Conservatory on Belle Isle. Our assignments for the day included using black and white film to capture texture as well as full tonal range. We also practiced using a reflector while shooting a portrait. There were many laughs shared as we all sought out the perfect picture and used each other as subjects for our portraits.

After enjoying our Character Lunches, we headed back through the fog to Flint for the remainder of our classroom instruction. We were once again inspired by our awesome instructors—Will, Katie, and Micah—to dig deeper into the art of photography and develop our own style. The critiquing session was a little rough as we are all still learning, but it was neat to see the progress we had all made since yesterday. Many thanks to our fantastic instructors who explained how to make our images even better and challenged us to brave all odds to capture the moment!

Dear friends, I'm studying photography with the Institute in Photographic Studies at the Character Inn in Flint, Michigan… and I'm having loads of fun! I'm taking the Prizewinning Photography Lite course where we focus on the crucial points of creating great pictures.

Yesterday, we learned about our cameras and discovered the seven rules of creating perfect pictures. Today, we actually got to try out what we learned. Will Thornton started class with a wisdom search from the life of Joseph. Seeing the power of God in a vivid way helped us all get off on the right foot. Right after breakfast, we loaded up in the van and headed off to Frankenmuth—a quaint, quiet, Bavarian style tourist village. All around us there were opportunities for photos and I found some fun ways to apply what I had learned. Most of my pictures came out pretty snazzy! Tomorrow I get to find out how they do against the grueling critique of my instructors.

We also learned about using light to bring out the best in a portrait. I would never have thought that making a few easy adjustments to my subject's position and the available lighting could make such a difference. The instructors are well equipped and quite experienced. I asked a lot of questions.

I can hardly believe that it was only yesterday that I didn't know how to operate an SLR camera any better than an average "point and shoot" type camera. Today, I prefer using my Nikon's "manual" mode! I'm setting my own aperture and shutter speed with much better results than before.

Tomorrow is a new day, I'd better get some sleep.

Wow! I just took one step down a path that I didn't even know was there. I mean that I always considered photography cool, but not very useful. It was eye opening to see, hear, and begin to grasp how God can get glory from arrangements of pixels on paper.

I love getting excited about things, and seeing new ways to do things. In one day of class I've gotten an incredible excitement for photography, and I'm seeing a new form of communication. "A picture is worth a thousand words." This is one of those sayings that I've heard many times and never understood—until today. God be praised! I'm really looking forward to the rest of the course.
