I have had a wonderful time at the IPS Course this week. I didn't know photography could be this much fun! I have learned more about cameras and photographs in the last forty-eight hours than I learned in the past fifteen years! Shutter speeds, aperture, composition and metering have been taught to us in a very clear and fun way. We made our way to the cattle drive in downtown Dallas intent on getting six pictures, each displaying a different theme—blurred motion, stopped motion, deep depth of field, shallow depth of field, backlighting and hard lighting. We were sent our to capture images of a variety of different subjects ranging from bronze cows to waterfalls.

After shooting our two rolls of film we came back to the Dallas Training Center where we learned about the drama and life composition gives as well as many different ways to use flash photography. We were also taught the eleventh commandment "Thou shalt keep everything in balance." We finished by critiquing and explaining the images of the day and closed with a prayer of thanks to our Lord, asking Him to help us stay focused on Him and to remember that His yoke is easy and His burden is light.

Wow! What a day. This is the first full day of our photography course and it's been full of many new discoveries. We went to the Old City Park close by to take lots of creative pictures of old historic buildings and lots of beautiful flowers. That was such a blast to get us thinking like real photographers. We then came back to the Training Center plunging into important photography basics that weren't so basic in my little mind. We were "exposed" to some definitions of words that are commonly "flashed" around in the world of photography.

Words such as: Aperture, shutter speed, depth of field, light metering, and soft and hard light. My first thought was, "How am I ever going to remember all of those numbers?" But the instructors reminded us on to get bogged down by the terms; just to have fun with practicing.

I was feeling a little discouraged today about my lack of skill and knowledge, but as Mr. Stanley encouraged us: "We're giving you information and we want you to apply it and think about it and then we give it to you again in another situation and we want you to apply and study it and this continues until it becomes part of who you are. You are going to be immersed photography." Immersed in photography. I should take it all in stride.

I want to learn all I can and trust God to bring in to fruition in my life. I can’t wait to learn more thought the rest of the week, not only about photography but also in my walk with God, my Creator.

Today I arrived at the Dallas Training Center to take the IPS basic photography course. Dinner was great, chicken enchiladas and strawberry chocolate pie, mmm.

At 6:30 p.m. we had our first session, which was led by Mark Stanley, director of the IPS course. Colonel Bell, the director of the training center shared part of his testimony about a recent accident and how God used it mightily in his life. Mark then proceeded to share about how IPS came to be and a little history about the Dallas training Center. The session went on with out a hitch and we were able to learn a lot about each other through some questions that were asked. We finished up early and were dismissed for a good nights rest.

The BIG day.

Today had to be the most exciting (and the longest) day of the course. We left the DTC after an insightful Wisdom Search and a delicious DTC breakfast for the Dallas Arboretum. There, we participated in three clinics: Portraits, Group Photography, and Bridal Portraits. The overwhelming consensus of the class was that Group Photography was the most fun. After the different clinics we practiced our newfound photographic skills during a picnic in the park.

In the afternoon we had a tour of Total Color Lab and then it was back to the DTC for a short session on photography as a business. Instead of a photo review in the evening we piled into the vans once again and drove to Reunion Tower for a nighttime skyline shoot. There we practiced special effects and learned about the importance of tripods when using a really slow shutter speed (up to a minute or more in some cases). When we returned to the DTC it was off to bed for a well-deserved night's rest.

Another exciting day in the life of the IPS Class.

During Wisdom Search this morning Mr. Stanley asked us to share things the Lord has been teaching us lately. We learned a lot about each other and how we can pray for one another. Moving right along, after a wonderful DTC Continental breakfast it was off to the Farmers' Market and the historic West End District of downtown Dallas. Armed with our trusty cameras and two rolls of film, one each of color and black and white, we embarked on the day's work. Our assignment covered everything we learned yesterday from capturing leading lines, to complete tonal contrast, to proper composition.

In the afternoon we learned about photographing people; close, close, really close up photography (also called Macro Photography); and digital photography. After an outstanding dinner (lovingly prepared by the skillful hands of the DTC staff), we wrapped the day up with a slide show of the images we had shot this morning.

Wednesday proved to be another exciting day here at the Institute of Photographic Studies. Today we began with a wisdom search, which helped to establish our priorities for the day. Following the wisdom search, we visited two locations to practice different photo opportunities. The emphasis of our assignment was placed on learning how to manage aperture, shutter, and light metering. Our assignment included the following types of photos: Shallow depth of field, blurred motion, hard contrast side lighting, back lighting, and stopped motion. Many of the students displayed impressive qualities of creativity in designing their photo selections.

Following lunch, we we were treated to several informative sessions. Nathan Davidson very patiently described the elements of flash photography. Trinnica Jones enthralled us with her zeal for black and white photography. In our final session, Gentry Stanley accurately "framed" the subject of composition. We ended our day with a review of each students' work, which included a helpful and informative critique.
